Transforming BMW 7 Series Wheels with Diamond Cutting

A BMW 7 Series owner sought a fresh look for their vehicle's wheels, moving beyond a simple color change to incorporate a sophisticated diamond cut finish. This involved a complete stripping of the previous paint, followed by a meticulous restoration process. The entire procedure, including the essential stripping phase, took approximately two days to complete, ensuring a flawless foundation for the new aesthetic.

The Importance of Wheel Paint Stripping

The cornerstone of any successful wheel refinishing project, especially when repainting, lies in the thorough removal of existing paint layers. Overcoating old paint can lead to premature peeling and an uneven finish. At our facility, technicians utilize specialized stripping solutions and tools to carefully dissolve and remove the old coating, revealing the bare aluminum alloy beneath. This creates a clean, pristine base essential for optimal adhesion and longevity of the new paint. Refinishing over existing paint can reduce durability by up to 3-5 times compared to a properly stripped and repainted wheel.

Achieving a Flawless Finish: Painting and Diamond Cutting

Once the wheels are stripped and cleaned, the painting process begins, aiming for a finish that rivals the original factory standard. We use premium automotive-grade paints with a hardness rating of 3H or higher. The application involves a minimum of two coats, with an optional third layer for enhanced depth and protection. Crucially, each layer requires adequate drying time – typically 4-6 hours of natural air drying – to ensure proper bonding. Rushing this stage can compromise the paint's integrity, leading to future delamination. For this BMW 7 Series project, we dedicated over 12 hours solely to the drying process between coats.

Following the complete curing of the black paint, the intricate diamond cutting process commences. This technique involves precisely machining fine lines onto the wheel's surface, creating a reflective, faceted appearance that catches the light beautifully. For this specific project, we implemented a two-tone (or dual-tone) diamond cut. This means different depths of cuts were applied to distinct areas of the wheel: deeper, more prominent cuts on the outer rim for visual impact, and shallower, subtler cuts on the center face for a refined look. This layered cutting approach is what achieves the sophisticated two-tone effect.

Precision Machining and Final Protection

The diamond cutting itself is performed using advanced CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machinery, capable of achieving precision within 0.5mm tolerance. The machine follows a programmed path, meticulously carving the design onto each section of the wheel. The cutting phase for a single wheel typically takes 45 minutes to an hour. After machining, any burrs or sharp edges left by the cutting tool are carefully removed, and the surface is smoothed through sanding. This finishing step is vital to prevent damage to the tire during mounting. Including this meticulous finishing, the total time for one wheel ranges from 1.5 to 2 hours. For all four wheels on the BMW 7 Series, the pure cutting and finishing process spanned approximately 6 to 8 hours.

The final step involves applying a protective clear coat. This is essential to shield the newly exposed aluminum from oxidation and environmental damage. We apply two layers of a high-quality automotive clear coat, typically urethane-based, to ensure lasting protection and a brilliant shine for the diamond-cut surfaces.
