Genesis GV80: Why Wheel Repair is Essential for This Luxury SUV
The Genesis GV80 makes a powerful statement on the road. Its imposing size, substantial weight, and most importantly, its wheels, define its initial impression. For models equipped with sputtering (semi-gloss chrome) wheels, maintaining their luster is paramount. Damage to these wheels can unfortunately detract from the vehicle's overall premium appearance. We recently worked with a GV80 owner who faced this exact dilemma. With significant damage across all four wheels, they decided a full restoration was necessary. Here’s a detailed look at the wheel repair process performed in Cheonan, South Korea.
The Challenge of GV80 Wheels: Weight and Finish
The standard 22-inch wheels on the Genesis GV80 are exceptionally heavy, far exceeding those found on typical sedans or smaller SUVs. This increased weight significantly elevates the difficulty of wheel repair. Even the smallest speck of dust or imperfection can impact the final finish, making precision crucial.
Interestingly, during the same period, we serviced two GV80s for wheel repair. Both vehicles had two wheels on the passenger side that had been previously repaired by another shop. However, the results were disappointing. The key characteristic of sputtering wheels is their semi-gloss chrome finish, and the previous work failed to replicate this accurately.
Beyond Color: The Nuances of Sputtering Wheel Refinishing
Comparing the wheels, the previously repaired ones appeared dull and lifeless, lacking the characteristic sheen. In contrast, the restored wheels reflected light with a subtle, sophisticated semi-gloss chrome radiance. While they might appear similar at first glance, the difference in finish is stark.
Sputtering wheels are defined by a "semi-gloss chrome" finish, which offers about 50% of the reflectivity of full chrome wheels. They should possess a moderate sheen rather than a blinding glare. The previous repairs, however, seemed to have been completed using only a standard base coat without the specialized chrome-effect paint. This resulted in a dull finish, diminishing the perceived value of the vehicle.
The Three-Stage Wheel Repair Process
Our comprehensive wheel repair process is meticulously executed in three key stages, starting with the crucial initial preparation.
- Stage 1: Primer & Black Powder Coating
The process begins with stripping all existing paint layers to ensure a clean surface. A primer is applied to promote adhesion, followed by a black powder coating. This black base is fundamental, as it influences the final gloss level. Maintaining an immaculate environment during this stage is critical, as any dust contamination is extremely difficult to rectify.
- Stage 2: Mid-Coat Sputtering (Chrome) Liquid Application
This is where the signature semi-gloss chrome finish is achieved. A specialized chrome-effect liquid is applied using a sputtering technique. Precisely controlling the amount of chrome applied is a specialized skill. Too much results in a full chrome look, while too little allows the black base to show through, creating a dull appearance.
- Stage 3: Top Coat Acrylic Clear Coating
Finally, a protective clear coat is applied. This layer shields the wheel from environmental factors such as sunlight, acid rain, and cleaning chemicals. Each stage requires specific curing times, and the entire process, including a minimum 48-hour curing period, is essential for durability.
Addressing Previous Repair Shortcomings
The reason many shops opt for simpler, non-sputtering finishes is the inherent difficulty. Contamination on the black base coat in Stage 1 is nearly impossible to remove without starting over. Consequently, some businesses may skip the thorough stripping process or avoid the more challenging sputtering application altogether. However, this often leads to premature failure and the need for repeated repairs, ultimately costing the owner more in the long run.
Our commitment is to restore the GV80's wheels to their original, stunning condition, ensuring a finish that truly complements the vehicle's luxury status.
