Transforming the BMW M2 G87: Gloss Black Wheel Refinishing and Red Caliper Upgrade
Welcome to our latest project, where we showcase a stunning transformation for a BMW M2 G87, courtesy of our Cheonan branch. The owner of this high-performance machine, having completed the initial break-in period, felt the stock silver 930M wheels didn't quite match the aggressive aesthetic of the M2. Compounding this, the intense dust generated by the powerful braking system was proving difficult to manage, causing significant stress. To address both concerns, we embarked on a comprehensive project: refinishing the wheels in a sleek gloss black and repainting the factory Performance Blue calipers a vibrant racing red. This dual approach not only elevates the vehicle's visual appeal but also simplifies maintenance.
Meticulous Preparation for a Flawless Finish
The vehicle arrived in excellent condition, with both the wheels and calipers free from any damage, providing an ideal starting point for our work. Our team in Cheonan conducted a thorough inspection of all four wheels, confirming their pristine state. This level of preparation is crucial for achieving a perfect final result, making the subsequent refinishing and painting processes significantly smoother and more predictable.
The first step in our wheel refinishing process involved carefully dismounting the tires from the wheels. It's paramount to meticulously organize and store the tires, TPMS sensors, and wheel center caps to prevent any mix-ups during reassembly. This systematic approach ensures that each component is returned to its original position, avoiding potential errors and ensuring the integrity of the wheel and tire setup.
Following tire removal, we addressed a critical detail: the complete removal of old wheel balance weights and adhesive residue. Failing to remove these thoroughly would result in patches of the original silver finish remaining visible after painting. This step is fundamental to achieving a uniform, professional wheel refinishing. We utilized specialized tools to ensure every trace of the old weights and adhesive was meticulously removed, preparing a clean canvas for the new finish.
Gloss Black Wheel Refinishing with Powder Coating
With the wheels prepped, we proceeded with sandblasting, thorough cleaning, and degreasing to ensure optimal adhesion for the new coating. The gloss black finish was applied using a robust two-coat powder coating process. This involves an initial layer of gloss black base coat, followed by a top coat of durable acrylic clear powder. Powder coating is renowned for its superior durability compared to traditional liquid paints, offering enhanced resistance to chips, scratches, and chemical damage.
After the initial gloss black base coat application, the wheels were placed in our curing oven. Here, they undergo a high-temperature bake at 200 degrees Celsius for approximately 10 minutes. This thermal process allows the powder coating to melt and flow, creating a hard, durable shell that bonds strongly to the wheel surface. This curing is essential for the coating's resilience against impacts and environmental factors.
Once the initial curing is complete, the second layer – the acrylic clear powder coat – is applied. This transparent top layer enhances the gloss and depth of the black finish while providing an additional protective barrier against UV damage and minor abrasions. Following this, the wheels return to the oven for a final forced curing process at 200 degrees Celsius, completing the wheel refinishing.
A significant advantage of powder coating is that it requires no additional drying or curing time after the final bake. Once cooled naturally, the wheels are ready for immediate use, even washing with water. Unlike liquid paints that require extended curing periods, powder coating offers a much faster turnaround time without compromising on finish quality or longevity.
Vibrant Red Caliper Painting: A Multi-Layered Process
Simultaneously, the caliper painting process began. The original Performance Blue calipers were meticulously cleaned and prepped to ensure optimal paint adhesion. We then applied a specialized multi-layer coating system designed for high-temperature resistance and durability. This process typically involves:
- Surface Preparation: Thorough cleaning, degreasing, and light sanding to create a receptive surface.
- Primer Application: A high-adhesion primer is applied to ensure the subsequent paint layers bond effectively.
- Color Coat Application: Multiple thin layers of high-performance red paint are applied to achieve a deep, uniform color.
- Clear Coat Protection: A final layer of durable clear coat is applied to protect the color from fading, chipping, and chemical exposure, while also providing a high-gloss finish.
- Curing: The calipers are allowed to cure properly, often with heat assistance, to ensure maximum hardness and durability.
The result is a set of stunning gloss black wheels that perfectly complement the M2's aggressive styling, and vibrant red calipers that add a striking visual accent, hinting at the performance potential within. This combination significantly enhances the car's overall presence and addresses the owner's initial concerns about aesthetics and maintenance.
