Lamborghini Huracán PPF: Why a Refresh Was Necessary

When acquiring a new car, paint protection is often the first consideration, especially for a supercar like the Lamborghini Huracán. The owner of this Huracán had initially opted for a full-body black Paint Protection Film (PPF) for a sporty, aggressive look. However, an unexpected issue arose: the official service center informed them that repairs would be restricted for vehicles with exterior film modifications, particularly colored films. This highlights a crucial point for supercar owners: always confirm service center policies regarding aftermarket films before installation. After deliberation, the decision was made to remove the black PPF and opt for a transparent PPF instead.

The Downsides of Previous PPF: A Low-Quality Film's Toll

Upon removing the old film, the issues became apparent. Small rock chip marks were visible on the front end, indicating the previous film wasn't providing adequate protection. This is a common drawback of lower-quality films, which are often thinner and less durable, failing to fully absorb impacts from road debris. A more significant problem emerged during the removal process: substantial adhesive residue was left on the paintwork. Cheaper films can degrade over time, leading to partial peeling or leaving behind stubborn glue when removed. This residue can potentially damage the paint, necessitating careful cleaning with specialized removers and professional techniques.

PPF Reinstallation: Preparation is Key

After thoroughly removing the adhesive residue, the surface appeared clean, but microscopic contaminants could still be present. The pre-installation preparation is arguably the most critical phase of PPF application. Inadequate surface preparation can lead to film lifting, air bubbles, and a significantly compromised final finish. At Today's Car Pyeongtaek, this stage was handled with utmost care, involving multiple steps including dry cleaning, application of an alcohol-based solution, and a final wipe-down to ensure a truly pristine surface. For a high-value vehicle like the Huracán, precision is paramount, as errors can be difficult and costly to rectify.

Installation process:

1. Surface Preparation: Meticulous cleaning and decontamination to remove all dust, oils, and adhesive residue.
2. Film Application: Applying a specialized slip solution to allow precise positioning of the pre-cut PPF.
3. Squeegeeing: Carefully using a squeegee to remove all air and moisture from beneath the film, ensuring a smooth, bubble-free finish.
4. Edge Wrapping: Tucking the film edges discreetly into panel seams for a seamless, factory-like appearance.

Applying Transparent PPF: Precision is Everything

Once the surface is perfectly prepped, a PPF-specific alcohol solution is sprayed to act as a lubricant, allowing for precise placement of the film. Generously cut transparent film is then laid onto the car's body, and a squeegee is used to meticulously work out air and moisture from underneath. The key here is controlled pressure: too much can stretch the film, while too little leaves air pockets. Experienced installers use their tactile sense to guide the film and ensure all trapped elements are expelled. The curved surfaces of the Huracán's roof and window lines required exceptional concentration to ensure a flawless application.

Previous Installation Issues: Lifting and Imperfections

Unfortunately, some areas of this Huracán had previously installed transparent PPF from another shop. Inspecting these areas revealed lifting film at all edges. This is a common outcome when low-quality film is combined with inexperienced installation. Lifted edges accumulate dirt and grime over time, reducing clarity and compromising the film's protective capabilities. After consulting with the owner, the decision was made to proceed only with re-filming the areas that previously had black PPF, as addressing the older transparent film sections would incur significant additional costs.
