Transform Your Mercedes-Benz CLS with Multibeam LED Headlights

The Mercedes-Benz CLS, with its sleek coupe-like roofline and aggressive front-end design, is a head-turner. However, the stock LED headlights often leave drivers wanting more in terms of brightness and functionality. This review details a Multibeam LED headlight upgrade for the CLS, dramatically enhancing night driving safety and aesthetics. The process involved using genuine, high-grade used parts, custom wiring, and SCN coding, performed at our facility in Jungnang-gu, Seoul, taking approximately 8 hours.

Addressing the Limitations of Stock CLS Lighting

Standard CLS LED headlights feature a slim, somewhat basic DRL (Daytime Running Light) signature. While functional, they lack the intensity and advanced features needed for truly optimal night driving. They primarily serve as basic illumination, without intelligent features like adaptive beam control to detect and avoid dazzling other road users. The goal of this upgrade was to give the CLS a more aggressive and refined front-end appearance while significantly boosting its nighttime performance and safety.

Multibeam LED: Intelligent Lighting Beyond Brightness

The core advantage of Multibeam LED technology lies in its sophisticated adaptive lighting. Each headlight unit houses 80 individual LED matrices that can be controlled independently. This allows the system to precisely manage light distribution based on real-time driving conditions. A camera mounted on the windshield analyzes the road ahead, detecting oncoming vehicles or other obstacles. The system then intelligently dims or 'cuts off' the light in specific areas, preventing glare for other drivers while maintaining maximum illumination in the rest of the field of view. This makes it a truly intelligent lighting system that reacts to its environment, not just a brighter set of lights.

Ensuring Reliability with Genuine Parts

For this upgrade, genuine Multibeam LED headlights were used. These were high-grade used parts, but in excellent condition with no visible scratches or cracks, comparable to new units. The customer had the opportunity to inspect the parts before installation. The genuine units are identifiable by the MERCEDES-BENZ lettering etched inside the lens and the MULTIBEAM LED logo at the bottom, signifying the advanced 80-LED matrix control system.

The Crucial Role of Wiring and Coding

The most challenging aspect of a Multibeam LED upgrade isn't the physical replacement of the headlight units themselves, but rather the intricate wiring modifications and connector adaptations required. Depending on the CLS model year, even headlights that appear physically identical can have vastly different wiring harnesses and communication protocols. The pin configurations and wiring layouts of the standard connectors differ significantly from those of the Multibeam units, making simple adapter harnesses insufficient. Without a deep understanding of the vehicle's electrical architecture, attempting this modification can lead to serious issues within the car's entire electronic system. Our technicians possess the expertise to perform these complex adaptations and wiring jobs safely and accurately.

Activating Features with SCN Coding

Following the physical installation and wiring, the final step is activating the new system through Mercedes-Benz's official programming and SCN (Software Calibration Network) coding procedures. This ensures the Multibeam LED headlights function seamlessly as if they were a factory-installed option, integrating perfectly with the vehicle's ECU (Electronic Control Unit).

Installation Process:

1. Removal of the original headlight units.
2. Custom modification of wiring harnesses and connectors to match Multibeam specifications.
3. Installation of the genuine Multibeam LED headlight units.
4. Performing SCN coding to integrate the new system with the vehicle's ECU.
