Initial Assessment: Diagnosing the Damage

Upon receiving the Mercedes-Benz S580's genuine 20-inch wheels, we first diagnosed their condition. Inspecting the entire wheel revealed multiple scratches. Notably, at the 2 o'clock position, there was not just a surface scratch but a deep indentation in the aluminum. This level of damage meant that painting alone could not guarantee durability. Welding Process: Fundamental Restoration of Damaged Areas

The welding process began, essentially fusing metal to repair the damaged sections. Therefore, the technician must weld not only the damaged spot but also the surrounding area to create a uniform, smooth curve.

Heat Treatment and Painting: Enhancing Strength and Finish

Following welding, the most critical phase is heat treatment. This process involves slowly cooling the metal heated during welding to harden the surface. This phenomenon, known as 'paint chipping,' would necessitate re-service sooner rather than later.

The painting stage involves smoothing the heat-treated surface before applying primer, base coat, and clear coat. We finished the wheel in the genuine Mercedes-Benz "silver-black" color.

Natural Curing and Tire Installation

After painting, the wheels undergo natural curing. For the paint to fully harden, it requires a slow drying process in a controlled temperature and humidity environment, rather than just using a heat gun. Inadequate curing can result in a lifted or thin paint surface. We typically allow 48-72 hours for this natural drying process.

Additionally, the owner requested a tire change for this service. We replaced the tires that were removed from the wheels with new ones. We installed the standard size 255/40R20 Bridgestone tires, ensuring the driving feel returns to its original state.

Finally, after re-mounting the tires, wheel balancing is essential. The welding and heat treatment process can subtly alter the wheel's weight distribution. Dynamic balancing ensures the wheel spins smoothly and without vibration.
