The primary goal for this project was sonic purity. The client desired a clean and clear sound rather than an overly flashy one. To achieve this, the AVI MDN 70 was chosen as the center speaker, a premium Canadian-made driver excelling in mid-range reproduction. Due to the SL65 AMG's two-seater roadster configuration, the AVI speakers were strategically placed front and rear within the cabin. This arrangement creates an immersive soundstage where each instrument is distinctly audible, enhancing positional accuracy. Unlike the typical left-right door speaker setup in sedans, this front-to-rear placement is optimized for the unique acoustics of a roadster.

For the front doors, the Focal ES 165KX3 EVO 3-way units were installed. Focal, a renowned French audio brand, is celebrated for its exceptional resolution and detail. The combination of a 1-inch tweeter for crisp highs and a 6.5-inch mid-woofer for rich lows delivers both powerful bass and transparent treble.

The Foundation: Meticulous Installation Process

The installation process is intricate and crucial for optimal sound quality. It begins with removing the factory speakers and applying sound-deadening material to the inner door panels. This foundational step is vital for isolating the audio system from road noise and panel vibrations, contributing significantly to the final sound.

Installation Process:

1. Surface Preparation: The door panels are thoroughly cleaned, and sound-deadening mats are applied to minimize vibrations and external noise.
2. Custom Mount Fabrication: Bespoke wooden adapters (made from birch plywood) are crafted to perfectly fit the vehicle's interior space, ensuring a secure and precise fit for the new speakers.
3. Speaker Installation: The new speaker units (tweeter, mid-range, and woofer) are mounted onto the custom adapters, ensuring proper alignment and sealing.
4. Wiring and Integration: All necessary wiring is carefully routed, shielded, and connected to the new amplifier and DSP unit, ensuring clean signal transfer.
5. Tuning and Calibration: The Digital Signal Processor (DSP) is meticulously tuned to optimize the soundstage, frequency response, and time alignment for the specific cabin acoustics of the SL65 AMG.

Following this, sound-absorbing materials are added to further eliminate any residual vibrations. We consider these fundamental installation steps to be responsible for 50% of the final sound quality.

Precision Wiring and DSP Amplification for Superior Audio

Wiring is another area where professional expertise is evident. Signal, power, and ground wires are carefully routed through the vehicle's interior. To prevent noise interference from engine vibrations or electrical systems, each wire is individually taped for insulation and shielding. High-current and low-current wires are kept separate, and the ground wire is securely connected to a solid chassis point. This meticulous approach to wiring ensures the integrity of the audio signal, preventing unwanted noise from degrading the sound quality. This detailed finishing is key to high-quality wiring, and we never rush this critical phase, understanding that the system will be enjoyed for years to come.

Finally, the MATCH DSP UP 10DSP amplifier is integrated. This high-output DSP amplifier is the brain of the system, allowing for precise control over equalization, time alignment, and crossover points. This ensures that the sound is perfectly balanced and tailored to the unique acoustic environment of the SL65 AMG, delivering a truly premium listening experience.
