Why Your BMW X3 Needs a Surround View Camera

Parking a larger SUV like the BMW X3 can be daunting, especially with blind spots that create anxiety. Our Seoul Gangnam branch recently completed a Surround View Camera installation for a BMW X3, utilizing the 2D Super View system. This upgrade allows drivers to see a real-time 360-degree view around their vehicle, directly on the factory monitor. A significant advantage of this system is its installation without compromising the vehicle's original wiring or components, ensuring no risk to the factory settings.

Understanding the 2D Super View System

The 2D Super View system for the BMW X3 is more than just an addition of cameras; it's a high-definition solution designed for seamless integration. It connects to the factory monitor using an LVDS (Low-Voltage Differential Signaling) IN/OUT method, which provides a significantly clearer and sharper image compared to standard CVBS (Composite Video Signal) low-definition outputs. The wiring is plug-and-play, meaning it connects directly to the existing factory connectors without any modifications. The four cameras—front, rear, left, and right—are mounted using the original factory mounts, eliminating the need for drilling and preserving the vehicle's exterior aesthetics.

Installation Process for BMW X3 Cameras

1. Camera Placement: The front camera is installed in the original bonnet location, while the rear camera is positioned near the backup light. Side cameras are fitted into their respective factory mounts without any drilling.
2. Wiring Integration: All wiring is routed internally and protected with flexible tubing where it passes through the body, ensuring it's shielded from external elements like water during car washes. The wiring mimics the factory standard for a clean, integrated look.
3. System Calibration: Once cameras are installed, the system is calibrated to ensure accurate stitching of the 360-degree view.
4. Monitor Integration: The LVDS connection is made to the factory head unit, allowing the surround view feed to display on the original screen.

Seamless Integration with Your BMW's Factory Monitor

The surround view footage appears naturally on your BMW X3's factory display. When you shift into reverse (R), the system automatically switches to a top-down view combined with the rear camera feed. Shifting into drive (D) brings up the top-down view with the front camera. The display reverts to the original screen after a set period. For added convenience, pressing the hazard light button twice quickly activates the surround view manually, which is incredibly useful in tight spaces like narrow alleys or underground parking garages. You can also use the iDrive controller to cycle through different viewing angles (side, front, rear) as needed.

SUPER HD Cameras for Day and Night Clarity

All four cameras capture footage in SUPER HD resolution, providing clear images even in low-light conditions. The system also functions as a dashcam, with a USB port conveniently located in the glove box for easy video storage and management. This dual functionality means you can record crucial events or evidence from all around your vehicle, offering enhanced security and peace of mind.

Factory PDC Sensor and Parking Line Integration

The installed surround view system integrates flawlessly with your BMW X3's factory Parking Distance Control (PDC) sensors. You'll see the visual representation of the sensors on the screen, with color changes indicating proximity. The system also accurately displays the Parking Assist System (PAS) lines, providing virtual guides for precise parking. Additionally, a trigger function linked to the turn signals automatically displays the side view on the corresponding side when the indicator is activated, greatly assisting with lane changes and navigating narrow roads.
