This detailed review covers a recent wheel repair and painting project undertaken at the "Today's Car" Asan branch, focusing on three premium BMW models: the G60 530i, the iX60, and the G70 750i. While each vehicle presented unique wheel damage, the common goal was to restore the wheels to their original factory quality. The service involved CNC diamond cutting and powder coating, with the entire process taking approximately 6 hours per vehicle.

The Necessity of Diamond Cut Wheel Restoration

Many high-end BMW sedans feature a distinctive "diamond cut" finish on their wheels. This isn't just a paint job; it's a precise machining process that carves into the wheel's surface, creating a sophisticated, multi-dimensional look. However, this intricate finish is susceptible to damage, making scratches and imperfections highly noticeable. In this case, the 530i had significant scratches across the diamond-cut surface, the iX60 had damage extending to the background areas of the wheel, and the 750i, despite being new, had minor imperfections that prompted a restoration request. A crucial aspect of this service is individual wheel restoration. Repairing only one or two wheels can lead to a noticeable color mismatch compared to the untouched wheels, disrupting the vehicle's aesthetic harmony. Therefore, each wheel must be treated and refinished to match the original factory finish precisely.

The CNC Diamond Cutting and Powder Coating Process

The core principle of wheel restoration is replicating the original factory finish with utmost accuracy. The process begins with removing the wheels from the vehicle. Next, the wheels undergo sandblasting, where abrasive media is applied under high pressure. This process creates a micro-textured surface, essential for optimal paint adhesion. Unlike smooth surfaces, this textured finish allows paint to bond more effectively, maximizing the durability of the subsequent powder coating.

The main event is the CNC diamond cutting. Using advanced Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery, the original wheel's precise dimensions are scanned and programmed. Even slight deviations can result in a finish that doesn't match the factory standard. The 530i, iX60, and 750i, having different wheel sizes and designs, necessitated custom programming for each.

After the cutting process, another thorough cleaning and degreasing cycle is carried out to remove any residual dust or oils, preparing the surface for the final coating.

The final step is the application of a powder clear coat. This specialized automotive wheel coating is cured at high temperatures (200°C). Unlike traditional liquid paints, powder coating involves applying electrostatically charged powder particles to the wheel, which are then melted and fused in a high-temperature oven. This method results in superior durability and a high-gloss finish that significantly outperforms conventional painting techniques.
