Kia K5 DL3 Wheel Repair: Diamond Cutting for Deep Scratches

This Kia K5 DL3 came to us with significant wheel damage. The customer had previously been quoted by another shop that deemed the wheels unrepairable due to a lack of "diamond cutting angles" and the depth of the scratches. However, upon inspection, we determined that repair was indeed possible. The wheels had no prior repair history, limited machining surfaces, and numerous deep scratches. We successfully restored them to a condition closely resembling their original state using advanced diamond cutting techniques.

The Wheel Repair & Painting Process

Our comprehensive wheel repair and painting process involves several critical stages to ensure a flawless finish and lasting durability.

1. Surface Preparation: The first step is sandblasting. This process uses high-pressure air and fine abrasive media to create a micro-textured surface on the wheel. This texture is crucial for optimal paint adhesion. Sandblasting also effectively removes all contaminants, including dirt, dust, and iron particles, ensuring a perfectly clean surface for subsequent steps.
2. Structural Repair & Machining: For areas with deep damage or missing material, we perform precise welding to rebuild the necessary structure. This is essential for creating the correct angles required for diamond cutting. Following welding, the wheels undergo meticulous surface leveling. After welding and leveling, a thorough cleaning with specialized chemicals and detergents removes all residual abrasive media and contaminants.
3. Diamond Cutting: This is the core of the repair for alloy wheels with machined faces. Using a specialized CNC lathe, the wheel's surface is precisely machined. The cutting tool moves slowly, removing a very thin layer of material – often less than a millimeter – to eliminate scratches and restore the original finish. This process requires extreme precision to maintain the wheel's structural integrity and aesthetic. For a Kia K5, this stage alone can take 3-5 hours for all four wheels, depending on the severity of the damage.
4. Clear Coating & Curing: Once the diamond cutting is complete, the wheels are thoroughly cleaned and degreased. They are then coated with a high-quality powder clear coat. This protective layer shields the wheel from environmental factors like UV rays, moisture, and road salt, significantly enhancing the paint's durability. Finally, the wheels are cured in an oven to ensure the coating hardens properly.

The entire restoration process, from initial preparation to final curing, typically takes about two days. The result is a wheel that looks virtually new, with deep scratches and curb rash completely eliminated.
