Kia K900 Wheels: When 3 Years Isn't Enough

Even a luxury sedan like the Kia K900 can experience significant wear on its original wheels. After just three years, the protective coating on the K900's factory 'sputtering' wheels began to peel away. While not immediately obvious from a distance, a closer inspection revealed a widespread, patchy deterioration of the finish. This isn't merely an aesthetic issue; compromised wheel coatings can lead to corrosion of the underlying metal, compromising the wheel's integrity.

Replacing all four wheels on a K900 can easily exceed ₩1,500,000 (approximately $1,100 USD). Fortunately, a more budget-friendly solution exists: professional wheel repair and refinishing. This process can restore the wheels to a condition rivaling new ones without the hefty price tag.

Sputtering vs. Powder Coating for Kia K900 Wheels

The original K900 wheels feature a 'chrome sputtering' finish, a high-end process where metal particles are deposited onto the wheel surface in a vacuum. While visually appealing, this coating is susceptible to degradation from impacts, temperature fluctuations, and UV exposure over time.

Restoring these wheels can be approached in two main ways. The first is a direct re-application of the sputtering process, which requires specialized equipment and is costly. The second, and the method employed in this review, is a 'powder coating with chrome-look paint' process. Powder coating involves applying a dry powder electrostatically to the wheel, which is then heated to fuse into a durable finish. This method achieves a hardness of 3H or higher, offering excellent scratch resistance and preventing dulling (matting) of the finish, making it ideal for high-stress automotive components like wheels.

The 4-Coat Refinishing Process

The wheel refinishing process for the Kia K900 involved several key stages to ensure a durable and aesthetically pleasing result:

1. Surface Preparation: All existing peeling coating and any signs of corrosion were meticulously removed from the wheels.
2. Primer Application: A high-quality primer (base coat) was applied to ensure optimal adhesion for subsequent layers.

The entire process, including drying and curing times, took approximately 6-8 hours. After completion, the tire-mounting surfaces were protected with tape before the wheels were mounted back onto the K900, and tire pressure was adjusted.

The refinished Kia K900 wheels were visually indistinguishable from the original sputtering finish, with the chrome-look paint achieving a precise color match. The finish was exceptionally clean, free from imperfections, unevenness, or color bleeding.
