Mercedes-Benz CLS350 Custom Muffler Tip Tuning: What Changes?

To truly enhance the exhaust characteristics of a Mercedes-Benz CLS350, simply improving the sound isn't enough; aesthetic changes are crucial for a complete tuning experience. This installation involved replacing the stock rectangular muffler tips with custom dual round tips, simultaneously refining the exhaust note. The goal was to amplify the inherent grandeur of the Mercedes 6-cylinder engine without introducing excessive low-frequency boom, resulting in a sophisticated upgrade.

Assessing the Stock Condition and Setting Tuning Goals

Before proceeding with the CLS350's exhaust tuning, a thorough understanding of the owner's requirements and the vehicle's specific traits is essential. The balance of exhaust notes from a 6-cylinder engine can vary significantly between models. We measured the sound-dampening characteristics of the stock muffler and set a target sound pressure level (SPL) for the upgraded system, typically aiming for the 85-95 dB range.

The original rectangular muffler tips maintain the CLS's luxurious image but can appear visually heavy and understated. The owner desired a sportier exterior transformation coupled with a deeper exhaust tone.

Removing Stock Tips and Diagnosing the Exhaust System

During the removal of the stock rectangular muffler tips, the internal condition of the exhaust piping is also inspected. Identifying the presence of scale (exhaust deposits), pipe deformation, or oxidation helps predict how the sound quality will change post-tuning. While minor scale buildup is common in CLS350s around the 30,000-50,000 km mark, this particular vehicle was in good condition.

Exhaust system diagnosis includes visual inspection and backpressure measurement. Excessive backpressure can lead to engine power loss, while insufficient backpressure results in a lack of low-end exhaust notes. For this tuning project, we aimed to maintain a backpressure range of 120-150 mmH₂O.

Installing Custom Dual Round Muffler Tips and Adjusting Exhaust Sound

The custom dual round muffler tips replace the stock units not just for aesthetics but also for performance. Each tip is designed with an inner diameter (ID) of 65mm, ensuring simultaneous flow from both exhaust pipes while maintaining appropriate backpressure. This provides approximately double the flow area compared to the stock rectangular tips.

The post-installation acoustic testing, with the engine running, takes about 10-15 minutes. SPL and sound quality are measured during idling, acceleration, and deceleration. If necessary, minor adjustments are made to the internal resonators within the exhaust system. This process optimizes the system to naturally express the 6-cylinder engine's characteristic deep, resonant low-frequency tones (100-300Hz) while suppressing harsh high-frequency noises (above 3000Hz).

The Significance of "Popcorn" Sound During Acceleration

A highly satisfying outcome of this exhaust tuning is the intermittent "popcorn" sound during acceleration. This isn't merely a byproduct but an acoustic phenomenon resulting from the engine's combustion characteristics and exhaust valve timing. As engine RPMs rise, exhaust notes of various frequencies interfere, causing resonance in specific frequency bands.

However, excessive "popcorn" sound can lead to noise complaints. This tuning was adjusted to a level the owner desired – subtle yet noticeable. During actual city driving, the SPL is around 88 dB, which is not significantly louder than a typical passenger car's acceleration sound (around 80-85 dB) but provides sufficient presence.
