Volvo V40 Enhanced Parking with 360° Surround View Camera

Are you constantly worried about parking in tight underground garages or narrow streets? Today, we showcase a real-world installation of a 360° Surround View Camera system on a Volvo V40. By integrating four ultra-wide-angle cameras (185° field of view) with a dedicated 5-inch monitor, we've created an exceptionally effective parking solution. The system allows for seamless switching between front, rear, and side views even while driving, significantly reducing parking anxiety.

Addressing Parking Challenges in the Volvo V40

While the Volvo V40 is a stylish compact car, its factory-equipped rear camera alone has limitations. The vehicle suffers from significant blind spots and restricted side visibility, making maneuvering in confined spaces challenging. Although the customer initially considered the factory monitor, our consultation highlighted the superior effectiveness of the aftermarket 5-inch monitor combined with the OmniView NS system.

Before installation, a thorough inspection of the V40 was conducted. We identified the optimal locations for the four cameras (front, rear, left, and right sides), planned the wiring routes, and determined the best mounting position for the monitor. Protective measures were applied to prevent any damage during the process.

Precision Camera Installation for Accurate Surround View

The installation process began with the careful removal and mounting of the four cameras in their designated positions. Achieving an accurate composite top-down (bird's-eye) view relies heavily on precise alignment. Each camera must be installed at a consistent height and angle relative to the vehicle.

The ultra-wide-angle lenses, offering a 185° horizontal and 150° vertical field of view, provide a much broader perspective than standard cameras (around 100°). This wider view effectively eliminates blind spots along the sides of the vehicle and captures approaching objects from the front and rear.

Crucial Calibration for Seamless Surround View Integration

Following the camera installation, the most critical step is calibration. This process corrects for any height differences or angular misalignments between the cameras, ensuring the synthesized top-down view is accurate and distortion-free. Without proper calibration, the bird's-eye view can appear warped or objects may seem to float.

Our technician meticulously adjusted the camera angles while monitoring the display, ensuring that lane markings, wheel alignment, and vehicle body lines appeared perfectly symmetrical in the top-down view. The V40's relatively long hood required particular attention to the front camera's angle, which was precisely calibrated for a flawless result.

Monitor Mounting and Clean Wiring Management

The 5-inch monitor was strategically placed on the upper part of the dashboard. This location ensures optimal visibility and ease of use for the driver, requiring minimal head movement to view the screen.

Wiring was routed discreetly along the steering column and center console, hidden beneath dashboard panels and trim pieces for a clean, professional finish. Power wiring was connected directly to the battery for stable voltage, and video signals were synchronized with the vehicle's gear signals (R for reverse, D for drive) for automatic view switching.

OmniView NS: Intuitive and Smart Operation

The OmniView NS system's operation logic was configured for maximum convenience. Upon shifting into Reverse (R), the rear top-down view activates automatically. Shifting into Drive (D) switches the display to the front top-down view. The screen automatically turns off after a set period of inactivity, but can be manually reactivated if needed during driving.
