BMW 520i Around View Monitor Review — Enhanced Parking Safety
Enhancing Your BMW 520i with an Around View Monitor
Welcome to our latest installation review, where we focus on upgrading a BMW 520i with a state-of-the-art Around View Monitor system. This upgrade is crucial for drivers who frequently navigate tight urban environments, crowded parking lots, or complex underground garages. The primary benefit of an around view system, also known as a 360 camera, is its ability to eliminate blind spots by providing a real-time, bird's-eye view of the vehicle's surroundings. This significantly reduces the risk of low-speed collisions and makes parking maneuvers far less stressful. Today, we'll delve into the specifics of this installation on the BMW 520i, highlighting its seamless integration and advanced features.
Vehicle: BMW 520i
Service: 2D Super View Around View System + PAS Integration
Installation Method: Plug-and-play (no damage to original wiring) + LVDS High-Definition Integration
Camera Count: 4 (Front, Rear, Left, Right)
Key Features: 360-degree Top View, Video Recording, PAS & PDC Sensor Synchronization
Seamless Integration for a Factory-Look Finish
For premium vehicles like the BMW 520i, maintaining compatibility with original factory components is paramount. The 2D Super View system we installed integrates directly with the car's existing iDrive monitor via a high-definition LVDS connection, eliminating the need for any additional screens. The cornerstone of this installation is our "Jump by Jump" wiring method. This technique involves connecting signal wires in parallel without altering or cutting the original factory wiring harness. This ensures that the vehicle can be easily restored to its original state if ever needed, preserving the integrity of the car's electrical system.
Installation Process:
- Front Camera Installation: This is often the most intricate part, requiring precise drilling into the chrome grille to ensure a perfect fit without compromising the BMW's aesthetic.
- Side Camera Mounting: The original side bumper covers are removed to replace them with integrated camera mounts. This 1:1 replacement ensures no additional holes are needed, maintaining a factory-original appearance. Wiring is carefully routed through protective conduits to remain hidden.
- Rear Camera Integration: A new LED-integrated camera replaces the original license plate light assembly, providing a clean and discreet rear view.
- System Calibration and Connection: All four cameras are connected, and the system is linked to the iDrive via LVDS. Calibration ensures the 360-degree view is perfectly stitched together.
Each of the four cameras is equipped with Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) technology. WDR is essential for compensating for extreme lighting conditions, preventing the image from becoming washed out in bright sunlight or too dark in shadows, ensuring clear visibility day and night.
Advanced Functionality and Smart Integration
The true brilliance of this 360 camera upgrade lies in its intelligent synchronization with the BMW's native systems. When the driver engages reverse (R), the system automatically displays a combination of the top-down view and the rear camera feed. Shifting into drive (D) seamlessly switches the display to the top-down and front camera views. After a set period or when the vehicle is in motion, the system reverts to the original iDrive display, ensuring an unobtrusive user experience. The driver doesn't need to manually switch modes.
Furthermore, the system integrates with the car's Parking Assistance System (PAS) and Parking Distance Control (PDC) sensors. This means dynamic parking guidelines are overlaid onto the around view display, and proximity alerts from the PDC sensors are visually represented, providing comprehensive situational awareness during parking maneuvers. This combination of visual aids and sensor data makes navigating challenging spaces in the BMW 520i significantly safer and more convenient.
