Owners of luxury vehicles like the BMW i7 often worry about minor scratches on the rear bumper, especially from parking. While it's hard to avoid every little scuff, a practical solution involves removing existing minor damage and then applying Paint Protection Film (PPF) to prevent future issues. This case study details a BMW i7 rear bumper PPF installation.

The rear bumper is particularly susceptible to scratches due to its low position, making it the first point of contact during parking maneuvers. For minor imperfections that haven't penetrated the clear coat, polishing is an effective removal method. Following this, PPF offers the most realistic preventative measure.

Assessing the Damage and Polishing

Upon arrival at our facility, the BMW i7's rear bumper showed several fine scratches. The depth of these scratches is crucial; if they are within the clear coat layer, polishing can resolve them. Deeper damage reaching the paint layer would require touch-up paint, but in this instance, the scratches were superficial, allowing for surface polishing.

Polishing isn't just buffing; it involves using fine abrasives to carefully remove a thin layer of the damaged clear coat. The principle is to perform only the necessary amount of polishing to minimize the removal of the clear coat layer.

Applying the Paint Protection Film

After scratch removal, thorough cleaning and degreasing of the bumper are essential. Removing even microscopic dust and oils ensures optimal adhesion of the PPF. Once the surface is impeccably clean, the rear bumper PPF application begins.

PPF (Paint Protection Film) acts as a transparent shield. In Korea, partial PPF for a mid-size sedan typically ranges from 400,000 to 700,000 KRW, while for a mid-size imported SUV, it can be between 600,000 and 1,000,000 KRW. Prices vary significantly based on the vehicle model, the extent of the coverage, and the brand of film used (e.g., Ultrafit, 3M, XPEL).

Precision Installation with Wet Application

There are two primary methods for applying PPF: dry and wet. The dry method uses static cling, while the wet method involves a special solution to allow the film to slide easily for precise positioning and easier air bubble removal. High-end detailers often prefer the wet method for its superior finish.

The film is cut slightly larger than the bumper's dimensions. The solution is squeegeed out, carefully removing air bubbles and ensuring a smooth application. This process demands significant experience and skill. After application, the film typically needs 24-48 hours to fully cure and adhere.

A critical final step is the trimming. The edges of the film must be precisely cut along the bumper's contours without damaging the underlying paint. This requires a steady hand and expert technique.

Ultrafit Film: Clarity and Durability

The PPF used in this installation was Ultrafit. Different PPF brands offer varying performance characteristics. Ultrafit is known for its low-yellowing properties, meaning it resists discoloration from UV exposure over time, maintaining its clarity.

Scratch resistance is another key feature. A film with a hardness of 3H or higher is recommended to withstand minor abrasions from washing and detailing. Ultrafit meets this standard and also offers excellent hydrophobic properties, helping to repel water and prevent water spots.

Partial vs. Full PPF Coverage

While full-vehicle PPF provides maximum protection, it comes at a higher cost. Partial PPF involves applying the film only to high-impact areas prone to scratches, such as bumpers, door edges, and rocker panels. For areas like the rear bumper, which are frequently exposed to parking-related scuffs, partial PPF offers a highly effective and cost-efficient solution.
