For luxury cars, especially those with a black exterior, chrome trim can sometimes stand out too much. This case study addresses that common concern with a "chrome delete" vinyl wrap. We'll explore how wrapping the grille, bumper accents, and roof rails of a Volvo V90 in black film created a cohesive and sophisticated appearance. While a partial wrap, it significantly enhanced the vehicle's visual unity and added a substantial presence.

Partial Wrap vs. Full Wrap: Which is More Effective?

Vehicle wrapping generally falls into two categories: partial wraps and full wraps. A partial wrap focuses on specific areas like chrome trim or particular body panels, while a full wrap covers the entire vehicle in a new color. For the V90, a partial wrap was the clear choice due to its distinct advantages. Partial wraps offer significant cost savings, typically 30-50% of a full wrap, and a much shorter installation time, usually 1-2 days. This project targeted the grille's center and surround, the lower front bumper silver accents, the rear bumper diffuser, and the roof rails – just five key areas that dramatically altered the car's exterior. In contrast, a full wrap allows for a complete color change but requires over a week of work and costs more than double.

The "chrome delete" technique is a popular style within partial wrapping. It involves replacing the original chrome or silver finishes with black film, resulting in a more modern and unified look. This is particularly effective for black vehicles where chrome accents can create a visual disconnect. It's the most efficient way to resolve this aesthetic issue.

Volvo V90 Chrome Delete Wrap Process

The application process for this Volvo V90 involved using single pieces of film for each section to maximize the finish quality and minimize visible seams. Each component, from the grille surround to the roof rails, was meticulously measured and pre-cut to ensure a perfect fit before application.

Installation process:

1. Surface Preparation: Thoroughly cleaning the chrome and silver surfaces is crucial. Removing all dirt, grease, and wax ensures optimal adhesion of the vinyl film.
2. Film Application: Using a heat gun, the vinyl film is carefully stretched and molded to conform to the vehicle's curves. Gentle pressure is applied to eliminate air bubbles and prevent wrinkles, especially on complex shapes like the grille.
3. Precision Cutting: This is a critical step in partial wrapping. The film is precisely cut along the edges of the trim using a sharp blade. The goal is to create a clean, factory-like finish without damaging the original trim underneath. The film is typically tucked slightly inwards to prevent lifting.
